Gary Kautto
Recent works on wood, metal, and paper. I started out in art school with the customary life drawing, but in painting I explored abstraction. Post studies I focused on representational. My later work is influenced some by 14th century Italian art which can be seen in the palette, simplicity, and imaginary landscape. I have nothing baroque or operatic to say, so my work is small in scale, often painted on metal — a preference because I can be rough, scratch, sand, layer, and even hit it with a hammer. Subjects are what interests me in the moment. The trailer series is part family history. Some works are from my neighborhood, Armory Park Historic District. The works on paper are more spontaneous.
